4 Unique NYC Engagement Photo Ideas for Couples Who Want Something Different

I love a good, out-of-the-box engagement shoot! Not every couple dreams of kissing in front of the Flatiron or posing on a crowded bridge at golden hour. That’s great, considering NYC is full of unexpected corners and hidden gems that offer more personal and less cookie cutter options.

Are you on the hunt for unique NYC engagement photo ideas? Perfect, because I’m sharing a few of my favorite ideas to help get those creative juices flowing!

1. Astoria Park

Tucked away in Queens, Astoria Park is a peaceful little escape with skyline views and far fewer crowds. You can even rent a tent or bring a cozy setup for more privacy.

For laid-back couples seeking New York City engagement photos that are both easy and intimate, this is the move. It’s a total win for a creative engagement photoshoot in NYC away from the tourists.

The idea of the tent in Astoria Park is actually genius as it provides warmth, a romantic and cozy ambience, and time to enjoy the moment. One of my previous clients did this, and the vendor provided a brilliant setup. My client brought his own box of goodies and, adorably, his to-be fiancée was simply delighted with him, regardless of what she ate!

Needless to say, the entire setup was a hit! This works especially well if you or your partner have dietary preferences or restrictions who want to keep things personal and delicious.  And I, for one, was thrilled we got to bask in their romance from inside what felt like a perfect toasty little bubble – complete with candlelight, cozy pillows, and just the right touch of sparkle.

2. Rowboat Through Central Park

Sure, this idea is iconic, but for good reason. Gliding across the lake in a little rowboat is almost cinematic and undeniably romantic!

It’s Central Park, but with a twist that turns your engagement and resulting photos into something truly storybook. With Sam and Sarah, there were so many scenic moments, effortlessly unfolding between quiet tenderness and bursts of laughter — romance suspended in motion. And then there was that moment. You can almost hear the music swell, like a scene straight out of a fairytale.

Sha la la la la la…”

Do you feel it? That quiet spark, the hush of the world, the gentle nudge to “go on and kiss the girl.”

3. Rent A Private Restaurant Space

If you’re dreaming of intimacy, comfort and a space that’s already designed for hosting unforgettable moments, renting out a private room in a restaurant is a beautiful way to go.

Option 1: A Dominican Spot with Heart

Tuck yourselves away in a cozy corner in your favorite local restaurant. This makes for one of the best places to take engagement photos in NYC, especially if it’s already part of your love story.

My past clients Stephanie and Manuel did this. Even though she knew it was coming (she hired me, after all!), she still got emotional at how beautifully her fiancé pulled it off. He had rented a private room in a vibrant Dominican restaurant, and they were able to enjoy the moment while the song played, Cásate Conmigo by Silvestre Dangond & Nicky Jam. Perfect for Latinos planning a proposal moment!

Option 2: Milk & Roses in Brooklyn

Another couple reserved the garden of Mile & Roses in Greenpoint — one of Brooklyn’s most romantic spots.  With gorgeous bouquets, a white rose-lined aisle, and framed photos guiding the way, the setup was thoughtfully designed and effortlessly romantic. After the “yes”, they toasted with champagne and shared a quiet lunch, wrapped in the intimacy of the moment.

Pro Tip: After the big moment, I’ll show you a few East River gems nearby — perfect for soaking it all in and snapping some post-proposal portraits.

4. Enjoy Those Sky High Views At One of NYC’s Spectacular Hotels

Few things are more epic than New York City’s skyline views, and these rooftops bring major editorial energy. (Some favorites include Ink 48, The Wythe, and The Conrad Hotel!)

In fact, for my client Nikhil’s winter proposal, The Conrad was so gracious in offering a private rooftop moment. The couple’s family added flowers and candlelight, and we captured some cozy couple portraits indoors using the hotel’s stunning architecture.

Pro tip: Always double-check with the venue about photo policies or insurance requirements before booking your photographer!
